About GAMSAT

Test structure

  • Section 1 — Reasoning in Humanities & Social Sciences: 62 questions, 100 minutes
  • Section 2 — Written Communication: 2 essays, 70 minutes
  • Section 3 — Reasoning in Biological & Physical Sciences: 75 questions, 150 minutes
  • Section 3 covers Biology (~40%), Chemistry (~40%), Physics (~20%)

Scoring & interpretation

  • Each section scored 0–100; overall GAMSAT = (S1 + S2 + 2×S3) / 4
  • Median score is typically around 55–58
  • Graduate-entry programmes set their own cut-offs — typically 50+ for S2 and 55+ overall
  • UK universities often weight Section 3 more heavily

Preparation strategy

  • Section 3 is the hardest to improve quickly — start early (3–6 months).
  • Revise first-year university Biology and Chemistry; Physics at A-level depth.
  • Section 1: practise extracting arguments from dense academic text under time pressure.
  • Section 2: have a mentor review your essays for structure and persuasion.
  • Take at least 2 full-length mocks under realistic conditions.
